Homeopathy and Autism

Hello and good October to you.

I received an email from a reader last month who wanted to know if I had ever written about autism, and if I hadn’t would I consider doing it. I considered it and waited for a sign. The sign came in the form of a random stranger approaching me. This person told me a statistic. That statistic made me stop dead in my tracks:

• Autism affects ONE in every 150 people.

This number bowled me over, and it was to be the impetus for writing this article.

One in every 150 people. Think about it, that is a lot of people. If my math is correct, that is 2 million people affected by this illness. A bit more searching came up with these statistics: 

• AUTISM OCCURRENCE: One in every 150 children born in the US have autism. It is estimated approximately 1 million in the US have this disorder.
     o NOTE: This number does NOT include: PDD, Asperger's and other spectrum disorders. These statistics are endorsed by the CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics, and other federal organizations.

• U.S. FACTS:
o A new case of autism is diagnosed nearly every 20 minutes
o There are 24,000 new cases diagnosed in the U.S. per year
o The economic impact of autism is more than $90 billion and expected to more than double in the next decade.
o Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases.
o There is no medical detection treatment, or cure for autism.

• AUTISM COMPARED TO OTHER DISABILITIES: Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the U.S. today.

Compared to other childhood diseases Autism is the least funded per incidence. Leukemia has a 1 in 5000 ratio and is funded 300 million dollars a year. Whereas autism has a 1 in 150 incidence and is funded 15 million per year for study and research.

These numbers are all very similar throughout Europe and the 1st world nations.

So what is autism?

Tabor’s Medical Dictionary defines autism:
• “Mental introversion in which the attention or interest is fastened on the patient’s own ego; a self-centered mental state from which reality tend to be excluded.”

 
Wikipedia defines autism this way:
• “a brain development disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior, all exhibited before a child is three years old. These characteristics distinguish autism from milder autism spectrum disorders (ASD).”

The ASD or autism spectrum has five ranges:
• Autism
• Asperger’s syndrome
• Rett syndrome
• childhood disintegrative disorder
• pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS)

Each one has a specific set of markers that differentiate itself from another. A clinician will diagnose based on these markers. These markers are based on levels of functioning. As we go up the ladder of the spectrum, the levels of functioning decrease to where finally one with severe autism is has no communication to the outside world.

To witness this state is truly astounding and shocking. We are mammals and mammals, in general, are social beings and need community, and to communicate within their community. To see a person so removed from this need and desire is very peculiar esp. in children who rely this communication more than others.

Autism causes?

Heredity is considered the biggest predisposing factor in autism. Many signs point to the mineral, Mercury, found in most vaccines as the culprit. This idea is quite controversial and theoretical, and yet compelling, even convincing. The third factor is genetic birth defect – which is rare.

the homeopathic view point and approach to autism

I view autism no different from that of any other chronic illness. Each illness has its own set of specific symptoms, such as with autism. Homeopathy views illness as a disturbance on the foundation of our being – the vital force. Vital Force has other words for it “chi”, "life force”, “innate intelligence”, etc. The vital force is the thing that animates us and keeps us alive, and functioning – at what ever level. The vital force keeps us going in the best way it can under the conditions that are present, this idea is called homeostasis. Our body does the best with what it has, and it tries to balance and self regulate. If the disturbance on the vital plane is strong enough, the organism compensates in order to survive. This compensation over a period of time is called chronic illness.

Once the homeopath understands what is happening on that dynamic plane of action (vital force) then a homeopathic remedy can be administered to assist the vital force in its ability to adjust and rebalance in a healthier way. 

 
In the case of autism, homeopathy as had some outstanding and spectacular results. One particular homeopathic healing story is captured in one of the best selling books on homeopathy -  “Impossible Cure” by Amy Lansky, PhD. Amy was a scientist working for NASA. She had a son who was diagnosed with autism. She sought out different forms of care and found success in homeopathic treatment. It took many years of treatment with homeopathy and other modalities, but her son is now perfectly normal and cured of autism. She went on to become a homeopath and a homeopathic educator. Her book is a great primer on homeopathy – its history, how it works, etc.
